The Airport has the coolest street address in Las Vegas: 5757 Wayne Newton Boulevard. The internet site for the airport is located at:- http://mccarran.com
The main telephone number at McCarran Airport is (702)261-5211.
ALL flights coming in from any U.S. city land in Terminal 1. Foreign flights land in the International Terminal 2, which is a different building. Foreign flights, with prior stops in a U.S. city will land in Terminal 1. Check to make sure you are in the right building.
The following information is for flights coming in from any U.S. city.
Your plane lands in Las Vegas. You walk off your plane. The first thing that you hear is the noise from the slot machines. Slot machines are everywhere, featuring the latest games. The airport slots are reputed to have the worst pay-offs in Las Vegas. Follow the signs "BAGGAGE CLAIM".
There are four Gates: A, B, C and D. If, when you get off your plane you are required to take a monorail, you are in “C” or “D” Gate in Terminal 1. Continue following the signs "BAGGAGE CLAIM". You will then take an escalator down and land up in the baggage claim room with baggage carrousels 1 to 8.
If you do not take a monorail but are taking moving sidewalks forever, you are in “A” or “B” Gate in Terminal 1. Keep following the signs "BAGGAGE CLAIM". You will then take an escalator down and land up in the car reservation lobby. To your left, is the room with baggage carrousels 9 to 12. To your right, is the room with baggage carrousels 1 to 8.
For any of the four Gates, (A, B, C or D) the car reservation lobby is very important. The car reservation lobby is located between the two baggage carrousel rooms and contains counters for the following car rental companies: Avis; Avis Preferred; Airport; All State; National; Hertz; Hertz #1 Club Gold; Savmor; Dollar and Budget.
Also in this car reservation lobby there are two huge banks of telephones. Each individual telephone (there are over 200) is connected directly to Hotels, Motels and Rent-a-Car companies. You can make reservations or inquire about rates.
In the center of this car reservation lobby there is also a very important counter called "INFORMATION". At this booth you can get FREE: Las Vegas Street Map, Nevada State Map, Relocation Guide (50 pages), Wedding Guide (45 pages), Visitors Guide (58 pages), Nevada Events & Shows (64 pages). You have to ask for them as they are not on the counter. There are also restrooms, public telephones and courtesy information telephones in this area.
Located beside Baggage Carrousel 2, is another important feature. It is the counter or desk called "TRAVELERS AID & ASSISTANCE" and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week. They will assist you, at no charge, on anything you need. Tips are not expected but are accepted if offered. Most frequent requests are baggage carrousel location for your flight, location of rental car area, calls to hotels and to page family or friends you are supposed to meet. Their telephone number is (702) 261-5234 and they do take your telephone requests for assistance.
MGM Grand and New York-New York hotel guests have a free hotel check-in room where they can pick up hotel room keys. This check-in room is located in the Baggage Claim area at the bottom of the C & D gates escalator, across from Baggage Carrousel 1 and 2. Guests can also make restaurant reservations and purchase show tickets. For $12 per person, both ways, they handle your luggage AND provide a shuttle bus until 6 p.m. only. For one way it’s $8.50. Open 10 a.m. to midnight, seven days. Telephone (702)891-3377. YOU MUST BE A HOTEL GUEST AT THE MGM GRAND OR NEW YORK-NEW YORK TO USE THIS SERVICE
Bally’s, Paris Las Vegas, Flamingo and Caesars Palace hotel guests also have a free hotel check-in service where they can pick up room keys. This facility is located at the bottom of the D gates escalator, across from Baggage Carrousel 1 and right next to the MGM Grand facility described above. Guests CANNOT make luggage arrangements, shuttle bus arrangements, restaurant reservations or purchase show tickets. Pretty useless facility, if you ask me. Open Mondays thru Wednesdays 10 a.m. to midnight and Thursdays thru Sundays 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Telephone (702)261-4686. YOU MUST BE A HOTEL GUEST AT BALLY’S, PARIS LAS VEGAS, FLAMINGO OR CAESARS PALACE TO USE THIS SERVICE
For your luggage there are three options:
1. Rent a SmarteCarte for $2.00. The machine takes only $1 bill, $5 bill and all credit cards. No coins. Each cart is good for about four pieces of standard luggage. 2. Porters are available. No direct charge. Usually you tip them $1 per piece of luggage. Minimum tip $2. 3. Haul them out yourself. I rent a SmarteCarte.
Please note: Usually, you cannot take luggage out of the baggage carousel rooms without your airline luggage receipts.
To get to your hotel from the airport there are six options:
1. Shuttle buses from the Airport to Strip or Downtown Hotels.
If you are in the baggage carrousel area, look for the sign on top of the doors marked "Buses/Limos" (Door #4). Go outside and you will find the following companies curbside (they each have a little hut to buy tickets, the buses are waiting curbside, no advance reservation is required and you can pay by cash or credit card). THE FIRST PRICE QUOTED IS FOR THE STRIP, THE SECOND PRICE IS FOR DOWNTOWN. ALL PRICES ARE PER PERSON, ONE WAY FROM THE AIRPORT TO YOUR HOTEL. Gray Line charges $4.40 and $5.50 Their toll free telephone number is 1-800-632-2100 and their local number is (702)384-1234.CLS charges $4.00 and $5.00 (Pick-up free tourist magazines at their little hut.) Their toll free telephone number is 1-800-266-2577 and their local number is (702)740-4545.
Bell Trans charges $4.00 and $5.25 (Pick-up free tourist magazines at their little hut.) Their toll free telephone number is 1-800-274-7433 and their local number is (702)739-7990. Their internet site: http://www.bell-trans.com
These shuttle buses go on a milk run, delivering the nearest descending passengers first etc.
2. Hotel shuttle buses.
Before you leave your home, verify with your hotel if they have a shuttle bus or if they will give you a coupon for one of the shuttle bus companies above. Also verify how and where you will meet their bus.3. Taxis.
If you are in the baggage carrousel area, look for the sign on top of the doors marked "Taxi" and exit. Taxis run on the meter. About $18 for downtown. About $8 to $14 for the Strip, depending on where you are going. Tip extra. Maximum number of passengers inside a taxi, in Las Vegas, is five according to The Taxicab Authority. Be aware of the tunnel that goes straight to the highway. This taxi ride will cost you DOUBLE a normal fare to a hotel on The Strip. Be sure to tell the driver NOT to use the tunnel.4. Limos.
If you are in the baggage carousel area, look for the sign on top of the doors marked "Buses/Limos" and go out. Limos charge by the hour. Each hour is $33 plus tip. One hour minimum. Advance reservation is advised, but there are usually many just waiting. You can make reservations and get information at:- http://lasvegaslimo.com/index.html5. Friends.
Arrange for friends to pick you up. Make sure you agree with them if they are going to meet you at the gate or on the sidewalk. If they are going to meet you on the sidewalk, they cannot leave their car for a second or they will receive a citation. If they will meet you at the gate, plenty of indoor and outdoor parking is available. There is even valet parking at the airport (this is Las Vegas).6. Rent a car.
Las Vegas has a very different sales tax structure on rental cars. State sales tax is 6% City/County sales tax is 7% Airport tax is 10% (only charged if you rent a car at the airport) The TOTAL is 23%.NOTE: You can save the Airport tax of 10% by ordering a car AFTER you arrive at your Hotel. It is only charged to people who rent a car at the airport. It is supposed to be charged to everyone who rents a car within 24 hours of arrival but that is not enforced.
If a local rent-a-car company picks you up at the airport, you might not be charged the extra 10%.
Most Hotels have car rental counters at the airport as described above or you can call a local company (look under Automobile Rentals in the Yellow pages) and they will come pick you up or deliver the car to your Hotel. Normally, the first 12 hours after you arrive, you do not need a car.
Always check with the car rental company to see what their policy is on this extra 10% tax.
When you depart from Las Vegas, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT, to check carefully which Gates your airplane is taking off.
The following airlines use the various Gates in Terminal 1:
A Gates: Alaska, Continental, Frontier and U.S. Airways.
B Gates: Allegiant, America West and Sun Country.
C Gates: Southwest
D Gates: American, Delta, Hawaiian Air, Midwest
Express, National, Northwest, TWA and United.
A and B Gates are relatively close together but are still two separate long corridors. You take a long escalator ride starting in Terminal 1.
The distance between the C and D Gate is considerable. If you go to the wrong Gate, you will have to come all the way back to Terminal Building 1 and take a different monorail to your correct Gate.
Here is the route you take to get to the C and D Gates. You must start in Terminal 1. Signs are all over the airport on how to get there.
There are two SEPARATE train tracks. The wait is at most 5 minutes since both tracks are being used. There is only one stop and no announcements. In terminal “D” you turn left for Gates 1 to 14 and turn right for Gates 30 to 43.
Note that there are no Gates 15 to 29, which are reserved for future construction.
All gates have fast food outlets, gift shops and many other airport type stores.
Allow extra time if you are returning a rented car as the drop-off point is NOT in the airport and you must take a car rental shuttle bus.
Also with the prices the car rental companies charge for gas, you should fill up at a local gas station just before returning the car.
